Here is a great artist who never received the recognition he truly deserved.

Aubrey 'Moon' Mullican was known as the 'King Of The Hillbilly Piano Players'. Born in Texas in 1909, he started playing in local honky tonks when he was 14 years old. He got his nickname 'Moon' because he was always working through the night in honky tonks.

Moon has a really distinctive piano style and voice. Moon was also a big influence to Jerry Lee Lewis. One of Moons biggest hits was 'I'll Sail My Ship' alone, a million seller that was later recorded by Jerry Lee on more than one occasion.

Moon was kinda like Bob Wills on the piano and you can hear how he was a big influence on the start of rock 'n' roll. Moon suffered a major heart attack and died on New Years Day 1967.

His contribution to country and rock 'n' roll music is immense. Many recordings have emerged since his death but the important part he played in the development of 20th Century music has never really been recognised. I was born 15 years after his death but Moon Mullican has greatly influenced me. Moon once described himself as being able 'to make the bottles bounce off the tables.' I'm sure they did!
