"Record Mirror" Review of Jerry's first night of the May 1963 Tour at Birmingham Town Hall The showed ended in quite a riot and a torn-shirted, tie-less and jacket-less, Jerry Lee ran offstage at the end of his second encore of "Hound Dog". He was immediately surrounded by policemen, bunged in a van and driven off at high speed. Some fans thought Jerry had been arrested for inciting the crowd but the police just wanted to get him out of the building and into the safety of his hotel room. The only problem for the police was that Jerry didn't know the name of his hotel! After driving him to a few of Birmingham's establishments Jerry eventually recognised the Albany Hotel and the police left him there. |

This review was written by Alan Stinton, a real Jerry Lee fan, and a journalist with the Record Mirror. This music paper went to press every Tuesday morning at 11am and space had been reserved for this review to be inserted at the last minute. Alan wrote it at the Albany Hotel while Jerry drank Coca Cola and met fans like Dan Coffey and Terry Adams. Another long time Jerry Lee fan, Graham Knight, now Kyle's Webmaster, then drove through the night to London and posted the report of the show through the record paper's letterbox at 5.30am. This ensured Jerry's opening performance was reviewed as soon as possible. Such is the devotion of Jerry Lee fans! |
