The Jerry Lee Lewis London Sessions - January 8th till 12th Advision Studios

musicians included: the late Rory Gallagher, Kenny Jones of the Faces, Klaus Voorman who played with the Beatles etc, Gary Wright of Spooky Tooth, Matthew Fisher of Procul Harum, Peter Frampton of Humble Pie, Andy Bown, Tony Ashton, Jerry Lee Junior, and Chas Hodges of Chas & Dave.

Also present at the sessions: Jud Phillips, Steve Rowland, Charlie Fach (head of Mercury) and two fans: Terry Adams and Graham Knight (Kyle's Webmaster)

In the 40th Anniversary Edition of Fireball Mail Terry Adams wrote:

"The London Session was another great experience. Graham remembers me being in the studio, standing next to Jerry, when he looked out to those in the control room and asked for song suggestions. Jud and Graham were in the control room along with Charlie Fach of Mercury and Steve Rowland and Graham said “Try Sea Cruise”. Jerry thought about it for a couple of seconds and launched into the Frankie Ford number."

"I remember thinking, this is a take and I am leaning on the piano, I was scared to move in case I made the lid creak and spoiled the take. It turned out to be a great track. Jerry had been doing “Headstone” at live shows in ‘72 and had always got a good reaction to it. I was one of those persuading him to do it at the Session."

Kyle's Webmaster Graham Knight also remembers from more than 30 years ago:

Jerry, Jud, Jerry Lee Junior, Kenneth, Dagwood and a flock more, including me, were all staying in the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London while Jerry recorded "The Session".

After each day in the Advision studio Steve Rowland would give Jerry small "dubs" of that day's recordings for Jerry to take back to the hotel. Jerry would then play them on a standard record player (phonograph for our US friends).

Inevitably this would be about 3am and Jerry would play them pretty loud as he wanted to check the sound as an ordinary fan would hear them in an ordinary home. As Jerry said at the time, "I've been fooled by the sound coming from those big studio speakers before!".

One night the manager tapped at the door and asked if we could keep the noise down and Jerry's reaction was instant. "We have got 17 rooms in this hotel - move my people above and below and alongside me and you will have no trouble".

The manager beckoned to me to follow him into the lobby and he said "That was Jerry Lee Lewis himself wasn't it. My wife thinks he is the greatest. Can you get me an autograph?". Within a few minutes he was back in the room apologising to Jerry and picking up an autograph.
